850,000 Wireless Phones Collected by Verizon Wireless' HopeLine Program in 2005 and Sprint Nextel Names New Board Member25 January 2006
Wireless Communication industry news provided by Financial News USA (OTC: FNWU) Wireless customers supported victims of domestic violence in 2005 by giving a record number of no-longer- used wireless phones to Verizon Wireless' (NYSE:VZ) HopeLine® program. During the year, more than 850,000 phones were collected at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, sporting events, concerts and corporate phone drives across the country -- an 18 percent increase over 2004 and nearly double the number of phones collected in 2003 -- bringing the total number of phones collected to more than 2.5 million since HopeLine's national phone collection and recycling efforts began in 2001. Of the 850,000 phones donated, about 10,000 phones were refurbished and given with airtime to victims of domestic violence in shelters across the country, while nearly 275,000 phones were recycled in an environmentally safe way. The remaining phones were refurbished and sold by a third party, with the proceeds used to fund cash grants to domestic violence prevention and awareness programs. In 2005, Verizon Wireless donated more than $750,000 in grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations in local communities around the country. The new AT&T (NYSE: T) will celebrate the excitement of the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team -- and that of an entire nation -- through a Web-based program that lets fans share their well wishes with athletes at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games beginning in Torino, Italy, next month. As part of its Olympic sponsorship, AT&T will also unveil a new phase of its major advertising campaign as well. AT&T Inc. is a proud sponsor of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Torino, and the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) announced recently that its board of directors has chosen five designees to the board of directors of the new company that will own and operate its local communications business, which it expects to separate in the second quarter of 2006. The designations will not become effective until the separation is completed. Four of the five designees are expected to be independent board members of the newly formed local communications company under the NYSE listing standards. These individuals represent a group of executive leaders from the communications, entertainment and media, finance, technology, marketing and government service arenas. Diamond I, Inc. (OTC BB:DMOI), a developer of wireless gaming products, recently advised that it was featured in the December 11, 2005, edition of E-CommerceTimes.com (circulation over 1.5 million).
