All roads lead to Washington for NZ business group

3 April 2006

Media release -- 3 April 2006

All roads lead to Washingtonfor NZ business group

Leading figures from business, government and the academic community from both New Zealandand the United States will participate in a significantmeeting in Washington this month.

New Zealand UnitedStates Council Chairman Rt Hon Jim Bolger today confirmedthat the US NZ Partnership Forum will be held in WashingtonDC 20 -- 22 April, 2006.

"The Forum is a majornon-governmental initiative. It will provide a focus forleaders from both countries to discuss key business issuesand build relationships with an overall aim of strengtheningthe foundations of friendship between New Zealand and theUnited States."

The Partnership Forum will be co-chairedfor the US by former US Agriculture Secretary ClaytonYeutter and the distinguished former Senator and currentDisney Corporation Chairman George Mitchell. Two formerPrime Ministers, Jim Bolger and Mike Moore, will co-chair onthe New Zealand side.

Releasing the list of 37 New Zealandparticipants (see below), Mr Bolger said the Forum hadattracted some of New Zealand s leading business people. Companies exporting both goods and services will be involvedat senior level, including Air New Zealand, ANZCO Foods,Fonterra, Jade Corporation, NZ Post, Solid Energy and PPCS. Other companies with major US interests including Deloitte,Trends Publishing and Assignment Group also form part of theteam.

The Government will be represented by twoMinisters, Trade Minister Phil Goff and Immigration MinisterDavid Cunliffe, as well as the heads of five governmentagencies. National Party representatives will alsoparticipate alongside the Council of Trade Unions, BusinessNZ and the Chambers of Commerce. Leading academics, research and educational organisations will also contributeto the Forum.

"This is a truly non partisan group. Itreflects the significance which New Zealand businessattaches to the US relationship. The US is a lifeline to theglobal economy. We cannot afford to ignore a marketapproaching 300 million people," said Mr Bolger.

InWashington, the New Zealand delegation will be joined by asimilar group of business and government representatives.Senior officials from the Bush Administration, includingCommerce Undersecretary Frank Lavin and Assistant Secretaryof State Chris Hill will address the Forum.

"The level ofengagement from the States has been extremely positive. TheUS participants are those who have a direct stake in the NewZealand economy or who recognise the relevance of NewZealand to US global interests. We ve also had excellentcollaboration from our counterpart in Washington, the UnitedStates New Zealand Council," Mr Bolger said.

Mr Bolgersaid that the focus of the meeting went beyond the prospectof a free trade agreement with the United States. While theCouncil continued to push for an FTA, the US was currentlybusy with some significant negotiations and there were a lotof other issues that could be progressed in a shortertimeframe.

"Instead of waiting around, we re saying,'yes, ultimately we want an FTA, but in the short term let sget on with business". There are a number of ways we canform an even closer relationship."

The Forum s agendafocuses on identifying key trends in the Asia Pacific regionand possibilities for co-operation between the privatesectors in both countries. Other global, economic and tradethemes relevant to business, including security, energy andtrade will also be discussed.

Mr Bolger said the mainmessage of the Forum is to demonstrate to an influentialgroup in the US the enduring relevance of links with NewZealand.

"New Zealand s relevance to the US goes beyondthe opportunities in our small domestic market. There areeven bigger opportunities for both of us arising from closerco-operation in the Asia Pacific region and in globalmarkets," concluded Mr Bolger.

The NZ US Councilacknowledges the support and assistance of Air New Zealand,Fonterra, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the Ministryof Foreign Affairs and Trade in making this eventpossible.
