Associated Baptist Press Runs Unverified Attack Report Against InovaOne22 February 2006
InovaOne issued an official statement today in response to a series of negative attack articles, one of which was published by the Associated Baptist Press (ABP) in an attempt to draw suspicion to the business practices of the company and question the ethical nature of its work with the North American Mission Board (NAMB).
The response, which was posted on the company's website and is being sent to ABP and other Christian news agencies, details the many inaccuracies and innuendos contained in the articles and offers factual information to discredit the false statements made against InovaOne and founder Steve Sanford.
The ABP article focuses on the claim that Sanford recommended the outsourcing of NAMB's communications unit during an audit he performed for the organization in 2003 -- and later benefited from this recommendation by obtaining a communications outsourcing contract for his company. The writer suggests that Sanford's audit led to the termination of 40 positions and 31 employees at NAMB.
In fact Sanford's audit never recommended the outsourcing of NAMB's communications unit, but instead recommended the formation of a Strategic Communication Group within the organization to create better corporate control and efficiency internally.
ABP editors based the article on another story published earlier in the week by the Christian Index, a Georgia Baptist newspaper. The Christian Index story was based on false information and hearsay, and relied on anonymous sources and "observers" for much of its content.
"The failure of the Associated Baptist Press to verify false information before publishing its article is inexcusable," Sanford said. "This is a premium example of shoddy, tabloid journalism. I certainly hope that it is not indicative of the Christian press as a whole."
