Atlantic Cape Community College Uses Text Messaging to Reach Students

This semester, when winter weather threatens to close Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC), students, faculty and staff can be notified instantly via a text message on their cell phones using ACCC TxtAlerts.

Atlantic Cape Community College, which is spread over two counties (Atlantic and Cape May), will use the TextCaster® software communication program from Mobile Media Technologies LLC to stay connected with more than 6,500 students at three campus locations in New Jersey: Mays Landing, Atlantic City and Cape May Court House. ACCC TxtAlerts keep students instantly updated with essential information such as weather-related closings and other up-to-the-minute bulletins. With cell phone usage almost universal among college students, the uses of TextCaster are bountiful and limited only by the length of the message.

ACCC is the first college in New Jersey to implement the new messaging system. “We had been searching for a text messaging platform that was easy-to-use, scalable, and within our budget, and TextCaster matched our criteria perfectly,” said Douglas Hedges, Dean of Information Technology Services at Atlantic Cape Community College. “Anytime we can improve communications among our students, and community, we are all better served.”

TextCaster was developed by Kansas City entrepreneur Rob Sweeney and is used in many commercial applications throughout the United States. But the adoption by schools at all levels is most pleasing to Sweeney. “It’s rewarding to see our technology help schools communicate with students, parents, faculty and staff” said Sweeney. “We’re very excited by how educators across the United States have embraced this communications tool, not only in local K-12 school districts, but also in educational environments ranging from day care to community colleges and universities.”
