Avaya IP Office Net Links Florida Schools16 August 2005
When one of Florida’s largest school districts needed to lower its telecom expenses, it turned to Avaya’s IP-based telecom technology services.
Indeed, the St. Lucie County Schools system decided to tap Avaya and its IP Office, a voice and data server, for the district’s new telecom reorganization project. The task not only provides the organization with lower-cost phone services, it will also make room for network growth as the school delivers new services to parents, students, teachers and administrators.
Approximately 4,000 teachers and administrators serve more than 25,000 students at 33 schools within Port St. Lucie, located south of Vero Beach on Florida's Treasure Coast
"There is a statewide mandate requiring us to use PBX equipment instead of purchased telephony services in order to minimize operating costs, so it was important for us to make a change," said Richard Stabile, director of purchasing and warehousing for the St. Lucie County Public Schools. "In addition, we knew that voice and data are merging, and we wanted a solution that would allow us to incorporate to IP telephony over time as we were comfortable doing so. Avaya IP Office will help us meet both these objectives."
According to Avaya’s communiqué, Arrow Communications, an authorized Avaya Business Partner headquartered in Stuart, Florida, designed the system for the schools. "Installation is now underway and is expected to be completed during the coming year," said the news release.
Arrow and Avaya plan to replace the more than 3,000 leased voice lines for 50 T1 data lines. The new data lines will link IP office systems that provide voice and data connectivity to each school and to three district offices housing administration, transportation, purchasing and maintenance personnel.
With the new system in place, teachers across the district will have two voicemail boxes, one for internal use so they can stay in touch with administrators and colleagues, and a second public voicemail box where they can post homework assignments and other messages that parents and students can dial in and hear. Teachers will also be able to hold conference calls with parents, administrators and other staff members without requiring participants to be physically present.
"Implementing our new network is a first step for us," concluded Stabile. "IP Office not only gives us new tools to improve our operations, but also allows us to evolve our capabilities over time as our needs grow and change."
Today’s announcement follows Avaya’s recent release of its IP-based speech self customer service system earlier this month. The new Avaya Voice Portal software platform integrates within a service-oriented architecture (SOA) providing speech-enabled Web services.
The Avaya Dialog Designer, the company’s new speech application development tool, enables designers to develop speech self-service applications. Integrated with Web services or in traditional environments, the Avaya Dialog Designer supports both Avaya Voice Portal and Avaya Interactive Response.
