BEA Systems Extends Leadership Role in Telecom Industry Standards for Next-Generation IP-Based Multimedia Services9 March 2006
BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), a world leader in enterprise and communications infrastructure software, today announced the extension of its leadership role within the telecommunications industry standards community. Named the specification lead for Java Specification Request (JSR) 289 for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) servlets, BEA is continuing to help develop and evolve the Java-based SIP and Telecom Web Services technologies which can help to facilitate the rapid creation and deployment of next generation IP-based multimedia services. BEA's work with JSR 289, coupled with its role in the development of JSR 32 for JAIN SIP, and its leadership positions in the Parlay Group, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), and JSR 144 for Operations Support System (OSS) Common API, further exemplifies the company's commitment to helping define the most important standards within the telecommunications industry today. "Given BEA's heritage in industry standards leadership, it is natural for our company to be at the forefront of the convergence of IT and telecom services," said Mike McHugh, vice president and general manager, BEA WebLogic Communications Platform. "We have extended our standards leadership role in Java and Web Services technologies to the telecom industry by leading the standards efforts for JAIN SIP, SIP Servlets, and Parlay X Web Services, which can help to add significant value to the telecom network operators, their partner and developer ecosystems, and to all of us as consumers of communication services." BEA has been named the specification lead for the next release of the SIP Servlet API, version 1.1, as specified in Java Specification Request (JSR) 289. With SIP Servlet 1.1, BEA is set to lead the effort within the Java Community Process (JCP) -- a standards organization for community development of Java technology specifications -- to help build upon the foundation established in SIP Servlet API 1.0 (JSR 116), and enhance key areas of SIP application development and deployment. JSR 289 is slated to address enhanced control of application composition, invocation and convergence at runtime and deployment time. These enhancements are designed to help further accelerate the creation and deployment of highly rich, flexible, and dynamic IP-based real-time, interactive, multimedia services based on SIP. Previously, BEA was the specification lead for Java APIs for Integrated Networks (JAIN) SIP, also known as JSR 32, and is now leading the effort to release an updated version of JAIN SIP. JAIN SIP is a set of core Java Standard Edition libraries for SIP that is designed to aid the proliferation of SIP clients and SIP application development. "The SIP servlet specification is an important part of the overall SIP technology portfolio. Having APIs like SIP servlets is the key to bringing the web development community to telecom," said Jonathan Rosenberg, a Cisco Fellow at Cisco Systems. "That community is essential for building the kind of innovative services that SIP was designed to support." In addition to the Java standards, BEA has been a leader in The Parlay Group, a telecom industry consortia focused on developing industry standard APIs to facilitate the development of new services based on IT technologies, such as Web Services, and integrated with telecom network capabilities, such as call control and messaging. BEA is a Full Member, as well as a member of the Board of Directors, and a leader in defining the high-level, simple Web Services interface to telecom network capabilities, called Parlay X Web Services. This builds on BEA's history of participation in telecom standards efforts, such as being a Full Member of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).
