Bell Aliant responds to Industry Minister's announcement on local telephone regulation13 December 2006
Bell Aliant is encouraged by today's announcement by Industry Minister Maxime Bernier that the federal government intends to change the rules for deciding when local telephone services should be deregulated. "Customers are the winners here," said Stephen Wetmore, President and CEO of Bell Aliant. "We are pleased that the federal government has recognized the competitive nature of many telecommunication markets and has acted accordingly to allow customer choice to prevail over regulation." "This is consistent with the recommendations of the expert panel on telecommunications policy delivered earlier this year and helps ensure that Canada's telecommunications sector remains internationally competitive," added Mr. Wetmore. Bell Aliant was among a group of telecommunications companies that appealed to the Federal Cabinet in May of this year to change the rules for local forbearance.
