20th February 2006

Boost Mobile Battle for Supremacy takesit to the kids

The Boost Mobile Battle for Supremacy isback, kicking off with the first regional battle inWellington on March 10th and this year incorporating anUnder 18 section.

Following in the footsteps of previouswinners such as Mareko (Deceptikonz) and Con Psy(Frontline), 16 MC s will lyrically battle their way throughthe competition to see if they have what it takes to be thebest. In true knockout style, the MC left standing at theend of the night is the champion.

Regional finals willtake place in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Aucklandwith the winner from each area battling it out at the finalin Auckland on April 29.

This year, for the first time, the Battle for Supremacy will encompass all elements of hiphop for all ages. An "Under 18" as well as an R18 event willtake place in each of the regional centres, leading up tothe National Final in Auckland. Event organiser, MCWordperfect is stoked that the competition has reached thestage where it can be available for all ages, "Thisquintessential Hip Hop cornerstone has now become the mostimportant nationwide platform for all Hip Hop talent. To befound at this powerful event will guarantee supremecredibility across Aotearoa in your chosen element."

Spectators will be treated to a full display of hip hopculture including beat-boxing, break dancing, MC-ing andDJ-ing with performances from DJ Manchoo and B-boyDfye.

MC battles emerged from the streets of New Yorkduring the 70 s and gave budding MC s a chance to battle oneanother using humour, showmanship and risqué spontaneity.Today s MC battles are a form of poetry mixed with theatresports, comedy and a dash of social commentary. The attitudeis one of no holds barred where off the top of the headcomments and lyrical counter punches fly!

This will be thethird year Boost Mobile is supporting the Battle forSupremacy as part of its ongoing strategy to support NZmusic and cultivate new emerging talent.

"We are veryexcited about this year s Battle for Supremacy and theinclusion of an under 18 component. This aligns perfectlywith Boost Mobile s ongoing commitment to support youngemerging talent. Boost Mobile is about hooking up people andgiving them a voice so there is a natural synergy with theMC Battle as it is a unique art-form that allows free andspontaneous expression," says Raelene Castle, ConsumerMarketing Manager, Telecom Mobile.
