Broadcom and Freescale Collaborate to Enable Mobile Phones with Bluetooth(R) Functionality15 February 2006
Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced a collaboration with Freescale Semiconductor that will feature the addition of Broadcom(R) Bluetooth(R) technology to the Freescale i.300 3G platform. Broadcom will provide technical support for integration of this Bluetooth functionality into the Freescale i.300 baseband processor platform, providing users with the richest possible multimedia experience, including the ability to stream high-quality stereo audio to wireless headsets.
Mobile phones enabled with Bluetooth technology are becoming a burgeoning market, as In-Stat market research projects that by 2009 over 66% of the more than 900 million mobile phone handsets sold that year will include Bluetooth. As attach rates for the popular short-range wireless technology continue to grow, cellular chip providers are seeking diverse ways to facilitate their customers' desires to integrate Bluetooth into their phones. By working closely with Broadcom on this Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone reference design, Freescale can offer best-in-class technology to its customers in less time to help ensure a superior user experience.

Broadcom has ported its mobile phone Bluetooth software (associated with its Blutonium(R) BCM2045 single-chip transceiver) to the VRTX operating system to ensure compatibility with Freescale processors. Broadcom's Bluetooth software will be made available as a pre-integrated component to further shorten the development time required to add the technology to handsets based on Freescale baseband processors. The BCM2045 also features enhanced data rate (EDR) technology, which provides the maximum throughput available for optimal A/V performance and digital file transfers.

Availability
The BCM2045 single-chip Bluetooth EDR transceiver is available and shipping in volume production to manufacturers worldwide. The Freescale i.300-30 platform, featuring 3.6Mbps HSDPA, is sampling now to customers.
