CDBG, 2006 State of the Cities Survey on Tap for Upcoming Meeting of City Leaders26 February 2006
Thousands of local elected officials are expected to gather in Washington, D.C. on March 13 to March 15 to address federal policy issues critical to cities and towns, and to lobby Congress and the Administration as part of the National League of Cities' (NLC) Congressional City Conference. Top legislative priorities include: blocking the drastic funding cuts to the Community Development Block Grant program, addressing immigration reform, and ensuring local government involvement in any telecommunications legislation. At its annual winter meeting at the Washington Hilton Hotel, delegates will hear from prominent Administration officials, key Members of Congress, media, and will focus on promoting efforts to enhance and encourage the federal government to partner with local officials. The meeting will conclude on Wednesday, March 15, with delegates participating in City Lobby Day on Capitol Hill, where they will meet with Members of Congress to discuss national and hometown issues facing their constituents. NLC also plans to release the 2006 State of the Cities Opinion Survey, which will look at major challenges facing cities, key federal policy issues, and the impacts of Hurricanes Katrina/Rita. Among the speakers confirmed for the event are Michael Chertoff, secretary, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio); former Rep. John Kasich (R-Ohio), host of Heartland with John Kasich; and David Gergen, editor-at-large at U.S. News & World Report and former top aide to Presidents Reagan, Ford and Nixon. President Bush and other Congressional and Administration leaders have also been invited to discuss priorities and reactions to the NLC advocacy agenda. Workshops include sessions on immigration reform, telecommunication issues such as broadband and franchise authority, eminent domain, lobbying reform, water infrastructure, tax reform, community development and affordable housing issues, and federal emergency management.
