Community Oncology Conference Convenes in Washington - Opening Events Address Navigating Through Medicare Changes13 March 2006
With Community Oncology now at a crossroads, its leaders convened in Washington for a three day conference focusing on its most salient concerns and extraordinary opportunities. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050817/NYW098LOGO ) "Community Oncology treats 85% of the nation's cancer patients," according to Lee Schwartzberg, MD, Editor-in-Chief, for the journal Community Oncology and conference host. "We have accomplished so much -- improving cancer survival rates, lowering cost, and broadening access to care. Now our very existence is threatened by the changes in MMA. This conference enables leaders in oncology from across the country including physicians, nurses, administrators, and others to come together to share a vision of the present and the future." Day one of the conference focused on "Structuring Your Practice for Success." Speakers included well-known practice administrators and nurses who focused on many of the nuts and bolts issues facing clinics in light of the Medicare Modernization Act and cuts in cancer care reimbursement. Specific highlights included: 1. Mary Kruczynski, practice administrator from Pennsylvania, discussed the concerns caused by the confusion of Medicare carriers mixing up Part B covered drugs for oncology and Part D drugs covered under MMA. 2. Bobbi Buell, MBA, consultant, addressed the complex issues created by the various coding changes that have occurred in oncology. 3. Steve Coplon, MHA, CEO of The West Clinic in Memphis and Dawn Holcombe, MBA, Executive Director of the Oncology Network of Connecticut, articulated the trends in oncology reimbursement and underscored that MMA overcorrected in drug reimbursement while under correcting on essential services. In addition, they discussed new models of reimbursement based upon quality and disease management. 4. Traci Young, MSN, RN, ONP discussed the important role of oncology nurse practitioners and successful models in community oncology clinics. Thursday's program will include members of Congress past and present as well as administrators from CMS and thought leader oncologists, administrators, and business leaders. The day's focus will be "Meeting the Challenges of the Practice Environment." For additional information contact Dianne Kube, Community Oncology Alliance, 202-756-2258.
