Extreme Networks Delivers Innovative Wired and Wireless Network for Colorado's Brighton School District

17 February 2007

Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR), today announced that it is working with the Brighton School District of Colorado to deliver a highly available Ethernet network backbone and recently installed a complementing wireless edge network supporting students and staff with mobile classroom computers.

Resulting from cooperation between Extreme Networks(R), integrator GTRI and Brighton's IT staff, the multiyear technology project has successfully replaced an ATM backbone with a scalable Ethernet network enabling the simple deployment of advanced applications and communications for the expanding school district.

Brighton School district has grown steadily over time, adding an average of 1,000 students per year while also building new school sites. Brighton's IT staff consists of seven people and the entire multi-campus network is managed by two specialists. The primary technology requirement for Brighton was the ability of a network vendor to eliminate system downtime to provide a complete solution that reduces complexity and fits the requirements of its staff.

Utilizing the experience of Extreme Networks and integrator GTRI, Brighton selected a network foundation with high performance features, including Fast Ethernet to desktops and Gigabit network backbones, to serve eight separate K-8 schools, one alternative school and two high schools supporting over 1,000 staff members and 11,000 students throughout Brighton, Henderson and Commerce City.

Because Extreme Networks provides hardware redundancy and an innovative, modular software foundation, ExtremeXOS(TM), the Brighton School District was afforded the capability to keep the network available, even during routine software updates.

"We needed a family of carrier-class Ethernet switches and Extreme Networks represented a vendor with a strong reputation and products," said Carlotta Barnes, telecommunications coordinator for the Brighton School District. "The district cannot afford system downtime and required a solution that was easy-to-manage, since we have a small staff. Extreme Networks met all of our needs -- including our budget and timeline."

To update its network and allow for mobility throughout its classrooms, Brighton deployed Extreme Networks' wireless LAN solution, featuring Altitude(TM) 350 access points. This supports students and faculty with wireless access via its 802.11-based network. By using Extreme Networks' Summit(R) WM100 switches, the school district gains the benefit of centralized management and control, while the Altitude access points deliver plug and play installation.

"Extreme Network's Altitude access points are very simple to install because they feature auto-configuration with the Summit WM100 and can dynamically adjust power levels as necessary, saving us time and resources," said Barnes.

Management and security are also centralized and monitored with Extreme Networks EPICenter(TM) software application. This lets Brighton deploy wireless network connectivity both efficiently and easily.

Extreme Networks has also provided the district with its BlackDiamond(R) 8800 switches, Summit(R) 200 and Summit 300 series switches to boost bandwidth when accessing online resources, the centralized grade-book application and staff/student directories.

"As school districts evolve and grow, they need a network that is ready for emerging applications and the integration of IP communications," said Scott Lucas, senior director of solutions marketing for Extreme Networks. "Extreme Networks' intelligent network solutions support wired and wireless connectivity and offer direct benefits to Brighton's staff, allowing them to maximize resources and maintain a very high-performance network."
