Finland's Elisa Selects Alcatel's IP Solution to Converge Fixed and Mobile Networks13 September 2005
Alcatel (NYSE: ALA; Paris: CGEP.PA) today announced that Elisa Corporation, a leading telecommunications service provider in Finland, has selected Alcatel's IP service routing solution to power its next-generation, IP/MPLS network. Elisa selected the Alcatel solution because it enables the convergence of fixed and mobile operations onto a single platform -- ensuring lower operational and capital expenditures, while simultaneously opening up the opportunity to offer a range of new services that offer a richer customer experience. The new nationwide network, which became operational in July, comprises several hundred network nodes, based on the Alcatel 7750 Service Router (SR) and 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM). Elisa can thus offer stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs) on real-time voice, video and business-critical data applications while sustaining unique Quality of Service (QoS) characteristics and simultaneously supporting multiple service types with tremendous scale. Due to this unique feature set, this network forms the cornerstone of Elisa's current and future services offering, including aggregation of broadband and 2.5 and 3G mobile traffic, IP Virtual Private Network (IP-VPN) and Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS). "With this infrastructure investment we are well positioned to deliver a competitive portfolio of flexible, user-centric services," said Ismo Heino, director of Elisa's Access and Carrier Services. "IP/MPLS is the key technology for the converged, multiservice networks of the future. This network enables us to efficiently deliver our current offering of fixed telephone, broadband and mobile connections with new levels of performance and reliability while evolving our services to meet future customer needs with reduced operational costs." "The 7750 SR provides Elisa with one of the most advanced IP service capabilities in the world today: a very high capacity, user-centric platform that will merge fixed and mobile services onto a single IP network," said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel's IP activities. "The complete Alcatel solution enables Elisa to deliver end-to-end reliability for business-critical deployments, based on new levels of service control that are required by service providers and customers alike." Alcatel is focused on the continued enhancement of its IP portfolio in order to meet the diverse needs of its customer base and ensure high customer satisfaction. This has led to its confirmation by independent industry analysts as a "top-three" provider of IP solutions. In particular, Alcatel has led the industry in the definition of the multiservice edge router segment, based on delivering the critical feature set demanded by progressive service providers who seek to use IP/MPLS to converge multiple networks while simultaneously initiating profitable and compelling new services. To date, more than 70 of the world's leading service providers in 30 countries have selected the Alcatel IP portfolio.
