Health Employers and Community Bargaining Association Sign Tentative Agreement26 March 2006
The Health Employers Association of British Columbia (HEABC) and the unions comprising the Community Bargaining Association (CBA) have signed a tentative four-year collective agreement, expiring March 31, 2010. This tentative agreement, which covers approximately 15,000 employees who work at home support agencies, child development centres, mental health centres, community service agencies and health authorities throughout British Columbia, is the third agreement reached with unionized health sector employees prior to the March 31 deadline. "We are pleased with this agreement. It embodies significant improvements to working conditions and wages, while supporting high quality sustainable service," says Louise Simard, President and CEO of HEABC, the 315 member association that acts as bargaining agent for BC's publicly funded health employers. "Community healthcare employees are vital in delivering quality healthcare across the province." The agreement provides for a compounded wage increase of 11.4% over four years. The agreement includes a Signing Bonus of $3,700 (based on hours paid) and an additional $500 to recognize past skill enhancements for each FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) on ratification. "We are certainly pleased that we were able to achieve this tentative agreement, and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and recognize the negotiators on both sides of the table," says Simard. The current provincial agreement for the Community Subsector expires March 31, 2006. CBA members include Community Health Workers, Assisted Living Workers, Resident Care Aides as well as other positions. Members of the CBA are represented by the BC Government and Service Employee's Union (BCGEU), the Health Employees Union (HEU), and the UFCW - United Food and Commercial Workers, as well as five other unions. The Tentative Agreement will be going to HEABC's Board of Directors and Members for ratification.
