India and Eu to Jointly Address Major Telecom Issues18 February 2005
Both India and European Union (EU) would jointly address the telecom issues pertaining to security, inter-operability, content and roaming in the next Joint Working Group meeting to be held in May 2005. This was decided at a meeting of Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology with the EU Commissioner, Mr. Reding at Cannes in France yesterday. Both the leaders shared their vision for WSIS 2005 (World Summit on the Information Society) and decided to work closely on the agenda. Shri Dayanidhi Maran, is currently leading a delegation to France to take part in the Third GSM World Congress at Cannes, in France. Shri Maran also had one-to-one meetings with the leading International vendors namely Alcatel, Ericsson, Lucent, Motorola, Nokia and Nortel. The Minister also met the GSM Association Board Members.
During his meetings with the international vendors, Shri Maran apprised them about the various policy initiatives taken by the Government of India in the telecom sector. He stated that the Indian Government has set up high growth path for telecom sector with a target of achieving a subscriber base of 250 million by the year 2007. Shri Maran invited the vendors to set up manufacturing units in India and hoped that in-country manufacturing would play a key role in achieving this objective.
Responding to the Minister’s appeal, Mr. Serge Tchuruk, Chairman, Alcatel announced that the company was examining the possibility of setting up a global research centre on WiMax in India with the collaboration of a leading R&D facility. Mr. Tchuruk accepted the invitation extended by Shri Maran to visit India to finalise the company’s strategy. Mr. Carl Svanberg, CEO, Ericsson reiterated that the company was intending to set up an infrastructure-manufacturing unit.
Mr. Jorge Ollila, Chairman & CEO, Nokia affirmed that the company had already announced its intention to set up a handset manufacturing unit and also indicated that they would set up a Committee to also look into the possibility of infrastructure manufacture. Mr. Ollila also agreed to bring the Board members of the company to India in May this year to finalise this issue. Mr. Simon Leung, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific, Motorala indicated that the company would explore the possibility of setting up a manufacturing base in India.
During the meeting with the GSMA Board, the GSMA along with Motorola, announced a special initiative to launch a 30 dollar handset for emerging markets. Shri Maran welcomed the Board’s announcement and stated that this initiative would definitely improve the affordability and help expand the market faster, especially amongst 70% of India’s population which does not have the coverage. Shri Maran stressed the need to reduce other costs especially, the roaming costs. He stated that roaming was a USP of GSM and it must be made more affordable for consumers and told the GSMA to look into this matter.
