LightPointe Announces Optical Wireless Deployment With Leading African Carrier, Kenya Data Networks Ltd., in Cooperation With Huawei Technologies

6 December 2005

LightPointe, a designer and manufacturer of high-speed optical wireless products, announced today that Kenya Data Networks (KDN), a leading telecom operator in Africa, has deployed optical wireless links as part of one of the world's first leading-edge wireless network rings. KDN has installed three LightPointe FlightStrata 155 systems in a cost-effective, high-capacity metropolitan ring network for the city of Nairobi, Kenya.
Huawei Technologies, a strategic OEM partner for LightPointe, led the network integration, provisioning and installation for the wireless network deployment. In addition to KDN, Huawei is leveraging LightPointe's family of optical wireless products for several international carriers that provide a variety of subscriber services through mobile wireless and traditional wireline networks. In regions of the world where carriers are rolling out new networks and competing intensely to attract and retain new subscribers, LightPointe's optical wireless solutions are facilitating faster and simpler service rollouts for carriers while providing high-speed throughput for network services.
With several carriers in Kenya, competition is increasing at a rapid rate, as is subscriber demand for greater access to information and enriched services. To meet this surge, Huawei is leveraging its global momentum with LightPointe's license-free optical wireless products to accelerate network migration to higher bandwidth capacity.
According to Bob Preston, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of LightPointe, KDN's metropolitan network ring represents another proof point for how optical wireless is helping drive enhanced network services through license-free, point-to-point, high-capacity links that previously could be provided only by fiber-optic cable or certain forms of licensed wireless. "In addition to reinforcing the value proposition of LightPointe's outdoor wireless products, this installation is yet another example of how market leaders like Huawei and KDN are deploying optical wireless solutions to handle new levels of network traffic while meeting ever-pressing demands for greater operational efficiency and reduced operational expenses in overcrowded or saturated airwaves," Preston says.
Kai Wulff, managing director of KDN, says the LightPointe optical wireless links are providing full-duplex bandwidth of 155 Mbps for the network ring just as if the connections were wired fiber-optic cabling.
"We are impressed by the performance of the optical wireless equipment -- even under severe weather conditions," Wulff says. "The equipment has surpassed our expectations, and we are intending to deploy more optical wireless links in different areas of the region."
Traditionally, leased E1/T1 lines or licensed microwave solutions have been sufficient to provide network connectivity for carrier networks. In regions of the world where network traffic is doubling annually, however, these solutions no longer are as attractive an option, due to their bandwidth limitations or licensing issues.
LightPointe's FlightStrata sets the standard for secure, reliable, inteference-free, point-to-point connectivity. With its four-beam and four-receiver design, FlightStrata is designed for optimal performance and cost-efficient markets seeking license-free wireless infrastructure alternatives to traditional radio frequency (RF) or leased lines.
For carriers in emerging markets throughout the world, LightPointe's outdoor wireless products are highly cost-effective replacements for traditional wireless microwave or wired infrastructure such as copper or fiber-optic cable. The technology also can address up to 75 percent of the needs for mobile wireless backhaul in today's networks and next-generation 3G architectures. With nearly 4,000 systems installed in more than 60 countries, LightPointe's products have been deployed by leading service providers and mobile carriers, including China Mobile, Sprint, M1 and Nextel Mexico.
