Microsoft actively promoting Windows Mobile PDAs and cell phones in local stores in EU12 December 2004
While in past we were complaining that Microsoft is not doing enough to promote Microsoft powered cell phones, it looks like it is no longer true. We have seen many promotional actions of Nokia - mainly promoting Nokia N-Gage gaming console / cell phones - but not of Microsoft. By now promotional actions of Microsoft always have been limited to dropping some promotional leaflets about Windows Mobile and pay for some general Windows Mobile advertisements in computer and communications related press.
Now it changed, in local stores with gadgets and cell phones in EU, Microsoft is placing people in t-shirts with "Windows Mobile" logo on them and at the same time placing demonstration stands like this one: ... where yuo can see, from the left to the right: Pocket PC PDA from HP, T-Mobile MDA Compact (small Pocket PC Phone with megapixel camera) and T-Mobile SDA Music (Microsoft Smartphone with fantastic additional buttons to control music player functions).
There is yet long way to go for Microsoft, because business model of Microsoft powered cell phones is much more complex than in the case of Nokia for example (Nokia owns/controls Symbian, Nokia makes hardware, Nokia makes marketing) - because Microsoft makes software, T-Mobile is branding phones and HTC in Taiwan is making hardware. In this complex model everybody is expecting that somebody else will do marketing, but at the end of the day nobody in this chain is doing it enough! While Microsoft is late with these marketing efforts, it is slowly catching up...
