National Volunteer Week24 April 2006
Today, the Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Stockwell Day recognized the beginning of National Volunteer Week, which is taking place from April 23, to April 29, 2006. "I am proud to announce National Volunteer Week which recognizes the vital contributions volunteers make to Canadians," said Minister Day. "Volunteers play a key role in assisting the Department of Public Safety and its Portfolio in delivering government programs and services that help make communities safer." Each year, for example, thousands of volunteers work with offenders in correctional facilities and the community, playing a significant role in achieving one of the fundamental roles of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) - to contribute to the protection of society by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens. "Volunteers play a crucial role in keeping our communities safe by helping offenders successfully reintegrate into society," said CSC Commissioner Keith Coulter. "Their hard work and dedication make a valuable contribution to the public safety of Canadians." Volunteering is also a fundamental part of the RCMP's community policing philosophy and enhances relationships with community partners to help ensure safe homes and safe communities in Canada and abroad. "Volunteers who work with the RCMP to assist our members in delivering services to communities are of incredible importance to us," said RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli. "These volunteers - approximately 75,000 strong - deserve to be recognized and to be thanked for their service to Canadians." National Volunteer Week is being celebrated across the country, by governments, communities and most importantly by Canadians helped by volunteerism.
