Telecom Makes the Next Move to Deliver Next GenerationBroadband Telecom said today it will be rolling out thenext generation of broadband technology from June. Theinstallation of ADSL2+ will start in June, laying theplatform for the delivery of Next Generation Broadband (NGB)services in the following months. General Manager WiredMatt Crockett said the next phase of services were part ofthe multi-year $1.4 billion transformation of Telecom snetwork. "Telecom has partnered with Alcatel to put thissubstantial new telecommunications infrastructure foundationin place, taking business and consumer broadband services tothe next level," Matt Crockett said Alcatel s GeneralProgramme Manager Warren Mickens said the project is a majorstep in delivering a world class broadband capability forNew Zealanders. "The Telecom-Alcatel partnership willdeliver much higher broadband internet speeds this year aswell as the introduction of more high quality nextgeneration broadband services, critical to New Zealand seconomic and social future," Mr Mickens said. The NGBservices to be introduced to parts of New Zealand this yearinclude: * High speed broadband services designed todeliver peak download speeds of up to 24Mbps subject tolocation of customers; * Home based video calling withdedicated handsets; * A broadband Internet Protocol (IP)television trial that builds on the in -- house trial of IP TVnow being conducted among some Telecom staff; MattCrockett said these mass market services would complementthe high bandwidth broadband offers now available to largerbusiness customers, including One Office which offersbroadband connections with speeds of up to 1000Mbps. Hesaid the wider transformation of Telecom s network was ontrack. "The big piece of background work going on is thebuild of the all IP network and we are set to start movingcustomers onto Next Generation Voice IP services from early2007. "The Next Generation Voice Trial we conducted lastyear with customers throughout New Zealand has given us alot of lessons about what customers really want. "It sexciting to be on a path which will soon start to deliverreally high speeds and, even better, services such as videoto our customers," Matt Crockettsaid.
