Objective Interface Provides Corba Communications Middleware for Industry's First JTRS-Certified Radio From Thales

20 January 2006

Objective Interface Systems, Inc. today announced at the SDR Forum that its ORBexpress™ communications middleware is the middleware foundation of the industry's first Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) software-defined radio (SDR) to be certified for Software Communications Architecture (SCA) compliance ("SCA Compliant with Waivers"). Thales Communications developed this radio for the Cluster 2 JTRS Enhanced Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (MBITR) program, also known as JEM. The ORBexpress software is the core applications and communications infrastructure for the JEM radio. JTRS radios must comply with the SCA standard. The ORBexpress software provides the essential communications foundation required for SCA-based radios. Additionally, the JEM has been certified by the National Security Agency (NSA) to protect voice and data up through the TOP SECRET level and is the first SCA-certified JTRS radio to be approved by NSA for Type 1 encryption.

The U.S. Government tested the Thales JEM radio and the ORBexpress software running on the radio using the JTRS Test Application (JTAP). JTAP is a tough, comprehensive set of tests for SCA-based software-defined radios. JTAP extensively tests both radio functionality and communications middleware standards compliance.

"Our JEM radio, using ORBexpress as part of its Operating Environment, proves that the SCA can be implemented in a size, weight and power-constrained environment," said Doug Bishop, Thales' Vice President of Engineering. "Objective Interface was very responsive to our needs for strict standards compliance and fast engineering turnaround."

"We would like to congratulate Thales on their outstanding achievement of attaining the first-ever JTRS radio certification by the U.S. Government," said Bill Beckwith, CEO/CTO, Objective Interface Systems, Inc. "We are delighted that our ORBexpress software and our consistent engineering support helped Thales pass their certification. This is a validation of our substantial investments in performance and footprint optimizations, code correctness and expert support team. We are proud to have helped Thales achieve this industry milestone."

About ORBexpress from Objective Interface

ORBexpress is the industry's most widely deployed Object Request Broker (ORB) for software defined radio (SDR). SCA-based SDRs, such as Thales' JEM, are systems that require CORBA for the design and deployment of their radio application. ORBexpress is based on the Real-time Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard that enables real-time and embedded devices in heterogeneous environments to communicate seamlessly. Thousands of customers worldwide have used the ORBexpress communications infrastructure to build more flexible, upgradeable and capable products. Available in C++, Ada and Java, ORBexpress has been recognized as the fastest ORB in the industry in an independent study conducted by Boeing's Phantomworks Group.
