OSHA Renews National Telecommunications Safety Panel Alliance; Agreement Continues to Highlight Ergonomic-related Issues

11 June 2006

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today renewed its Alliance with the National Telecommunications Safety Panel (NTSP) for another two years, continuing a cooperative effort to enhance workplace safety and health for telecommunications employees. OSHA and NTSP first entered into an Alliance ( http://www.osha.gov/dcsp/alliances/ntsp/ntsp.html ) during February 2004 focusing on the reduction and prevention of ergonomic hazards in the telecommunications industry.

"Ergonomic hazards, like most other workplace hazards, are best combated through knowledge, communication and prevention," Foulke said. "Over the next two years, OSHA and NTSP will continue looking into effective methods of preventing these hazards and finding even better ways to communicate the results to the telecommunications industry. Through the initial Alliance, we have made good progress; we want to continue on that road."

NTSP Chairperson Art Farmer added, "The NTSP recognizes the important role of comprehensive ergonomics programs in protecting the health and well-being of employees in the telecommunications industry, and we are pleased to cooperate with OSHA through this Alliance to mutually promote these goals."

The Alliance has allowed OSHA and NTSP to develop resources with information about the agreement and ergonomics in general. Working together, OSHA and NTSP have updated the Panel's Ergonomics Guidelines for Common Job Functions in the Telecommunications Industry ( http://www.telsafe.org/ntsp/Publications/NTSP%20Ergo%20G%20Final%20Version%202-23-06.pdf ) adding nine additional job functions and a Glossary of Terms and Exercises for the Office Environment. Additionally, the 2005 International Telecommunications Safety Conference in St. Louis featured updates on the Alliance as well as an Ergonomics Technical Update. Two representatives from OSHA's St. Louis, Missouri Area Office attended the conference as part of the Alliance's continuing effort to cross-train OSHA personnel and others in ergonomic safe practices.

The renewal will allow the NTSP and OSHA to improve on the Alliance's initial successes by raising ergonomics awareness even further throughout the telecommunications industry. Both organizations will continually update their individual Web sites and will also develop new telecommunications-related safety and health products, such as electronic assistance tools, fact sheets, and case studies.

The NTSP is a consortium of telecommunications safety professionals who work to promote safe and healthful workplaces for employees in the telecommunications industry. Its panel members include representatives from AT&T, Sprint-Nextel, Verison, and six other major telecommunications companies.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
