Review of phone relay service for the deaf15 February 2006
Hon David Cunliffe Minister of Communications Hon RuthDyson Minister for Disability Issues 13 February2006 Submissions sought on review of phone relay servicefor the deaf People with an interest in Deaf issues canhave their say about the review of the TelecommunicationsRelay Service, say Communications Minister David Cunliffeand Disability Issues Minister Ruth Dyson. The relayservice was established by the Government in November 2004to overcome barriers that deaf, hearing-impaired andspeech-impaired New Zealanders face in using standardtelephone services. The review of the service seeks inputand comment from interested people and stakeholders on arange of operational and service design issues. "It's beenone year and we're keen to ensure that the service isworking as well as it can for users," says MrCunliffe. The service works by using a relay assistant whoserves as the "ears and voice" on phone calls between adeaf, hearing-impaired, or speech-impaired user, and theother party to the call. There is no call surcharge forrelay assistance and there is no cost to the other partywhen they receive a relay call. "Early feedback indicatesthat the relay service has been making a significantdifference to the lives of those who use it. We want to hearfrom the public and stakeholders about their experienceswith the service," says Ms Dyson. The Ministry of EconomicDevelopment will consider submissions before releasing adraft report for consultation. The release is expected tobe in March. The formal call for submissions and the termsof reference for the review are available on the Ministry ofEconomic Development websiteat: http://www.med.govt.nz/pbt/telecom/trs/review/index.html Theclosing date for submissions is 28 February2006.
