Siemens at CeBIT: Product roll-out and more bandwidth for telephone applications

14 March 2005

Five new Siemens mobile phones

The five new models of the 75 mobile phone generation are perfect for business customers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The UMTS mobile phone SXG75 provides mobile multimedia communication over its entire bandwidth and offers GPS navigation. It supports a whole array of applications such as location-based services, Bluetooth for wireless data exchange, Instant Messaging and Push and Talk. In addition, it is equipped with a quick XHTML internet browser, FM radio and MP3 player, and has two cameras: a built-in 2 megapixel digital camera and a second CIF camera for video telephony. The SXG75 will be available from September 2005.

The M75 outdoor mobile phone continues the successful outdoor phone series. Its robust metal frame with rubber trim protects it from water spray, dust and dents, and it is equipped with several extra multimedia functions such as a 1.3 megapixel digital camera and an integrated music player. The M75 will be available from June 2005.

The new CF75 clamshell phone is a triband model with large color display and VGA-quality digital camera with 5x zoom. Among other features, it offers the walkie-talkie function Push and Talk. Users can choose between the infrared or the fast USB 2.0 standard for data transfer. The CF75 will be available in stores from July 2005.

The CX75 is equipped with a comprehensive multimedia package: 1.3 megapixel digital camera with video function, music player, Bluetooth, Push and Talk and a high-resolution color display. It is a triband model and has a built-in slot for exchangeable multimedia cards. It will be available from June 2005.

The stylish CL75 clamshell mobile phone combines elegance with modern multimedia equipment. It is a triband model with MMS, GPRS, Push and Talk and Instant Messaging. Its oval shape and colorful floral design make it a fashionable accessory. The phone even has a practical pocket mirror for on the go. If it hasn't been activated by push button, the display serves as a mirror. The CL75 will be available beginning from the second quarter of 2005.

Five new products for cordless communication at home

Siemens is extending its range for internet telephony via the cordless telephone. The PC adapter Gigaset M34 USB with Voice over IP ( VoIP ) software SIPPS from Nero will be available from April 2005. The USB adapter with software von Skype Technologies has been available since October 2004. The consumer can now decide between two of the largest VoIP providers and choose the company with the lowest rates. The Gigaset M34 USB is simply inserted into the PC’s USB slot thus establishing a cordless DECT link to a mobile handset via a Gigaset base station.

Those who want internet telephony without being connected to a PC have found the right solution in the Siemens Gigaset S35 WLAN . The mobile handset is wirelessly connected via wireless LAN ( 802.11g standard ) to a WLAN router which then connects to the internet. This provides a cost-efficient, fast internet connection with top digital sound quality. The user is alerted to incoming e-mails by a special blinking light on the device.

A completely new Gigaset W-LAN product family is also being presented at CeBIT, which enables data, picture and sound transfer at twice the previous speed via cordless 108 mbit technology with a router, PC card, USB adapter and repeater. The XR technology ( eXtended Range ) in the wireless router also allows a wider range than conventional systems. At the heart of the new line of products is the Gigaset SE 551 WLAN dsl/cable, available from May 2005, as are the Gigaset USB Adapter 108 and the Gigaset PC Card 108. The Gigaset WLAN Repeater 108 will go on the market in June 2005.

The Gigaset WLAN Camera is a compact surveillance camera with wireless LAN ( IEEE 802.11g standard ) and integrated Http server. It transmits high-quality video pictures to any PC. When the built-in motion sensor is activated, the user is immediately notified with a short sequence of video shots sent by e-mail. The camera will be available from March 2005.

“Gigaset Home Control“ is a simple and cost-effective system that will in future allow control of a home’s entire technology. The Gigaset cordless telephone serves as a central remote to control home appliances via a DECT module. Alarm messages can be transmitted to mobile phones and important functions remotely controlled by SMS from the base station.

New products for corporate customers

The buzzword ‘convergence’ refers to the merging of wireless and wired communication. With its HiPath WLAN series , Siemens offers products which provide uninterrupted seamless communication and simultaneous mobility. New access points and controllers provide fast transfers between frequency cells. The WLAN telephone optiPoint WL2 is a new addition to the portfolio.

For sophisticated applications in corporate networks, Siemens is showcasing new products based on the Session Initiation Protocol – or SIP. SIP is an open system that creates a continuous, convergent network architecture, thereby making SIP-based applications possible, even from external providers,. Siemens has expanded its range of SIP products and now offers new platforms, telephones and solutions. In order to keep investment and operating costs low for corporate customers, Siemens provides a leasing model based on its network platform HiPath 8000 : Communications applications provided through a central platform ( “hosting” ) will be available as a managed service. The main advantage of this model is that customers can sign leasing contracts for single applications.

For communications networks in hospitals, Siemens offers the new healthcare solution Siemens HiPath HiMed . It enables improved medical support right at the patient’s bedside. Medical personnel have direct access to the clinical information system via a TV monitor. Patients have access to information and communications media as well as functions such as a nurse call button, telephone and lighting controls.

The E-Mail Push and PIM ( Personal Information Manager ) synchronization solution from Siemens is one of the innovative new applications for mobile corporate communication. It is installed in the mobile provider’s network of a service provider or in a company’s intranet and provides secure access to the intranet and internet on the move.

For mobile coverage of GSM/EDGE networks within buildings, Siemens is presenting a nanoGSM Base Station Subsystem , an IP-based ( Internet Protocol ) solution. The system comprises small, cost-efficient mobile send and receive stations, so-called ‘indoor base stations’, which are integrated into existing company IP networks.

With MobileCentrex@vantage , a virtual extension system for small and midsize companies, network carriers are able to integrate all of a company’s mobile phones into a single private network within its public mobile network. In addition, this solution allows performance features from the company’s existing PBX installation to be seamlessly accessed from the mobile network.

More bandwidth means new products for fixed network operators

With the new IP-DSLAM platform , fixed network operators can expand their bandwidth for data transfer in their networks. It has a capacity of 24 or 48 gigabit/second and is based on the trendsetting Ethernet technology. Network operators are able to offer services that require markedly higher bandwidth, such as the bundling of video, data and voice ( so-called ‘triple-play’ ). This new product is available immediately.

“Smart Home” is the motto for Siemens’ showcase of new applications for network operators. Products such as Surpass Home Entertainment, Surpass Video Call Applications, Surpass Healthcare Services and Surpass Home Security are applications with which network operators can provide their customers with new home services that make daily life easier, more convenient or more entertaining.

Machine-to-machine mobile communication

In the machine-to-machine ( M2M ) communications field, Siemens is presenting alongside its new radio modules a variety of new mobile-based M2M solutions such as a telematic and security solution for private automobiles, a fleet management solution for public transportation and an electric meter that can be read via GSM/GPRS. Among other innovations, Siemens is also presenting a prototype of the “Ay One” , a mobile, palm-sized device with always-on function and numerous applications: It can be used as a mobile baby monitor, an alarm system – also in cars, campers or tents and as a communications tool for kids, the handicapped, and senior citizens. With a built-in mobile module, Ay One maintains contact with predefined mobile telephones.

Innovative ideas and studies for tomorrow's mobile communication

“Runster” is the ultimate music gadget and training companion of the future. From a mobile phone, it searches for just the right piece of music to accompany an athlete’s personal tempo and encourages his training program with the ‘voice coach’ function that monitors his individual profile and provides feedback on athletic performance.

With “Digital Video Broadcast for Handheld“ ( DVB-H ), the mobile phone will soon offer interactive television. In addition to being able to receive openly accessible television programs, DVB-H enables services such as the retrieval of background information on the current show or purchasing products on the internet. Siemens presents a device prototype equipped with a DVB-H receiver, stereo and a large VGA touch display. The “New Interactive Phone“ from Siemens is a test product which projects visual information onto smooth surfaces such as a desk. Together with a Bluetooth pen, the projection area functions as a virtual keyboard for data entry.

With the new radio chip “Radio Frequency Identification“ ( RFID ) one can retrieve information directly from an encoded label. “Near Field Communication“ ( NFC ) is the further development of this technology and enables reciprocal information transfer. At CeBIT, Siemens is presenting an RFID-capable mobile phone, with which a mobile ticketing service or the ability to download the latest rings on the go are just a click away.

With “Animated Instant Voice Messaging“ ( A-IVM ) , multimedia messages come to life. A user can for instance pick out and send a cartoon figure that will tell the recipient a joke when he opens the message.

With the Bluetooth “Cordless Telephony Profile“ ( CTP ) , the user can move freely around an area 100 meters from a fixed network base station and make calls in the fixed network from a mobile phone.

The “Com Badge” is a compact clip to fasten to the lapel. It can control various home appliances and functions through voice commands, and for instance open the door electronically.
