Symbian Ltd. today announced that Symbian OS(TM), the market-leading open mobile operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones, also known as smartphones, has shipped in 100 different commercial phone models to over 250 major network operators worldwide. In its Q1 2006 results issued today, Symbian also announced it had shipped 70.5 million phones to date worldwide since its formation. "It's a great milestone for Symbian to reach the shipment of its 100th phone model and 70.5 million Symbian OS phone shipments since we opened for business " said Nigel Clifford, CEO, Symbian. "This achievement is testament to the strong support of our customers, the world's leading handset manufacturers and to the network operators around the world who see Symbian OS as the open mobile operating system of choice. It's also down to the innovative contributions of tens of thousands of developers in the flourishing Symbian ecosystem of partner and customer companies." Since the Ericsson R380 shipped in 2000, Symbian has set the standard for smartphones, connecting a complex ecosystem of shareholders, customers, partners, vendors, content players and application developers. The Symbian ecosystem is focused on the delivery of cutting edge technology that supports the smartphone lifestyle - smart attractive devices, compelling applications and user-friendly experiences - that consumers increasingly demand. "By listening closely to our customers and understanding their needs, we are able to deliver the required technology in Symbian OS for tomorrow's mobile phone trends. This gives them a competitive edge to create a wide range of attractive devices for consumers who want different things from their phones - whether it's music, photos, entertainment, information, email or simply to make a call," Clifford added. "We are now planning for our next 100 models which will include many lower cost, higher volume phones and together with our customers and partners, are focused on making the smartphone mainstream and revolutionize the way phones are used."
