TCS Issued Patent for Enhanced E9-1-1 Location Information Using Voice Over Internet Protocol15 September 2005
TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a global leader in mission critical communications, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number USP 6,940,950, titled "Enhanced E9-1-1 Location Information Using Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP)." TCS now holds 38 patents and has approximately 100 additional patent applications pending in the United States and jurisdictions throughout the world.
The patent covers an E9-1-1 Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VolP) solution wherein a 911 call from a VoIP device is routed directly to the correct Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) via dedicated trunks. The voice call is delivered to the PSAP along with the caller's correct location, and callback number.
The patent provides a means for querying a Message Servicing Center (MSC) from a VoIP switch and a means for receiving an Emergency Services Routing Key (ESRK) in response. Additionally, the patent allows querying by an Automatic Location Identification (ALI) database for caller information related to the ESRK.
VolP gateways are implemented locally, at least one per Local Access and Transport Area (LATA) and accept inbound VolP packetized data. The packetized data is then converted to a standard wire line voice call format calls. Calls are routed to an Internet Protocol (IP) address at the VoIP gateway. The gateway egresses the call to a voice port at a selective router. Dedicated voice trunks connect between each local VoIP gateway to appropriate selective routers. An Automatic Location Identification (ALl) database is provisioned with ESRKs dedicated for VoIP use. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) circuits may be established between some or all of the various local VolP gateways.
Maurice B. Tosé, Chairman, President and CEO of TeleCommunication Systems stated, "Implementing the technology covered by this latest TCS patent is very important to the widespread adoption of VoIP. When emergency services are readily accessible via wireless VoIP devices, the barriers for mass VoIP adoption begin to relax and the needs of public safety are addressed more adequately."
