Telecom Industry Survey Finds Half of Supercomm Attendees Polled Think Converged Networks Will Take Three Years to Emerge

9 July 2005

Seventy percent of SUPERCOMM 2005 attendees polled in a Tellabs(R)/Telephony survey dated June 6 believe that a converged network will emerge in the next one to three years, with exactly 50 percent betting on the three-year mark. Ninety-four percent estimate that this convergence will happen in five years or less.

What many SUPERCOMM attendees may not realize is that Broadwing Communications, LLC has already made convergence a reality.

Broadwing, a leading provider of optical network communications services and solutions, recently commercially launched its Converged Network - an infrastructure purpose-built to deliver on the concept of truly converged, plug-and-play communications. The Broadwing Converged Network provides Broadwing customers with the flexibility to plug their applications into a single platform using existing last-mile technology - whether that be Ethernet, frame relay, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), private line or digital subscriber line (DSL).

The network uses the Tellabs(R) Multiservice PLuS(SM) solution, which provides true service interworking on a single IP Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) platform. This allows Broadwing to give its enterprise customers unprecedented flexibility by combining Layer 2 switching and QoS capabilities with the flexibility and intelligence of Layer 3 routing.

"As they migrate to newer service platforms that increase performance, enterprises and service providers are often faced with the challenge of trying to patch together a network that consists of multiple technologies in many different locations," said Courtney Munroe, Vice President, Telecom and IP Services for IDC. "Broadwing's Converged Network provides an elegant solution that solves this challenge by providing a true access-agnostic core network."

Broadwing's advanced Converged Network architecture exceeds the capabilities of traditional telecom networks. It already delivers next-generation performance and going forward will support a vast array of applications that can easily be accessed by or operate across the Converged Network infrastructure independent of local access network technology. Broadwing is enabling the concept of true telecom utility, where customers can plug any application into an outlet and enable all kinds of communications - just as electrical power ubiquitously enables the utility of devices from toasters to electric cars.

"Years ago, Broadwing realized that convergence was going to be the next big requirement for telecom players, and we set out to deliver on that requirement well ahead of the curve. After consulting with our customers, we designed a Converged Network that is unique in its ability to support a wide range of access technologies and support Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN services for our enterprise and service provider customers," said Scott Widham, president of sales and marketing for Broadwing. "Our goal at Broadwing is to make deploying new communications applications such as VoIP across any last-mile network as easy as plugging in your computer."
