2006 Telecom New Zealand Incubator Award FinalistsAnnounced
Fifteen of New Zealand s most dynamic start-upcompanies and business incubators, including companiesdeveloping power technology for medical devices and softwarethat maximises fabric cutting in the apparel industry, havetoday been named as finalists in the 2006 Telecom NewZealand Incubator Awards.
The finalists will contest fivecategories, with the winners to be announced at the Sky CityConvention Centre in Auckland on 28 February. The Awardswere introduced by Incubators New Zealand and Telecom in2005 with the aim of celebrating the knowledge-basedstart-ups that business incubators are helping togrow.
Incubators New Zealand Chairman Andrew Hamiltoncongratulated the finalists and believed they should beapplauded for their achievements.
"There s a misconceptionthat a successful business survives on the strength of theidea on which it was founded. The reality is that the ideais just the beginning. Businesses actually succeed or faildepending on the sheer effort that goes into identifying theopportunities and developing the business itself."
MrHamilton said that these finalists represent the newgeneration of business stars and should be role models forthe country s other budding entrepreneurs.
"We must excelglobally if we are to lift New Zealand into the top half ofthe OECD rankings. These finalists are working towards usingtheir technology or ideas to compete on the world stage andby doing so are helping to position New Zealand as a sourceof high value innovation."

TheAwards will also mark the start of the Telecom New ZealandIncubators Expo, at the Sky City Convention Centre from 10am- 4pm on Wednesday 1 March, where the public will have theopportunity to meet, learn about and connect with NewZealand s freshest and smartest young companies in thecreative and technology sectors.
There are currently 140fledgling companies based in business incubators throughoutNew Zealand and more than 80 companies have graduated fromincubators over the past three years. In that time,incubators have also helped their resident start-upcompanies secure about $34 million in equity capital.

NEW ZEALAND LEAD: Health: Sprott Says Ignore MOH Cot-Death Prevention Advice - Cot death expert Dr Jim Sprott is advising parents to ignore cot death prevention advice issued by Plunket and the Ministry of Health. His advice follows news yesterday that in the wake of a US study claiming that use of a dummy reduces cot death risk by more than 90%, New Zealand health officials are considering whether to add dummies to their cot death prevention advice. The US researchers suggest that dummies may assist in keeping babies' airways open if they get into a face-down position in their cots or become covered by bedding. See... Security: Former Spook Head Dies - Prime Minister Helen Clark today paid tribute to Paul Molineaux, a former Director of Security, who passed away on Thursday in Christchurch aged 85 years. "Paul Molineaux was Director of Security from 1976 to 1983. He oversaw a period of expansion in the Service. Before becoming Director of Security, he worked as a lawyer, served as a Magistrate and District Court Judge, and for a period as Chief Justice in Western Samoa. Following his term as Director of Security, he served as Privacy Commissioner for ten years." See Paul Molineaux

Planets - March is a good month for viewing the planets. Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible for the whole of the month. Mercury will be visible for the last half of March. Mars will be visible for the first third of the night. Mars is in the constellation of Taurus. Its magnitude fades from 0.7 to 1.2 during the month. Saturn will be visible for the first two thirds of the night. Saturn is in the constellation of Cancer, in which it remains until September 2006. Its magnitude slightly fades from -- 0.1 to 0.1.
