Thomson Chosen by UnitedGlobalCom -UGC- as One of the Set Top Box Providers for Accelerated Digital Rollout2 June 2005
Thomson (Euronext:18453)(NYSE:TMS) today announced that it had been chosen as one of the key vendors and leading technology partners by UnitedGlobalCom, Inc. (UGC) (Nasdaq:UCOMA), for its plans for an accelerated rollout of digital television to UPC Broadband's analog cable subscribers in the Netherlands.
As recently announced, UPC Broadband, a division of UGC, expects to begin in the fourth quarter of 2005 a large-scale digital rollout project in The Netherlands. As a result of this initiative, UPC Broadband expects to eventually deploy over 2 million digital set-top boxes with related middleware and security and conditional access systems, in order to accelerate the growth of digital television in the Dutch market.
In choosing Thomson's DCI5000 generation of set top boxes, UPC Broadband underscored its desire to lead the field in multiple play offerings to its customers. The state-of-the-art set top box platform, which is certified to EuroDocsis 2.0 standard, acts as a gateway for new services, including not only premium digital programming but also high-speed data and the potential for voice thanks to its embedded cable modem.
Sudhir Ispahani, Chief Technology Officer for UGC Europe, said: "We have chosen Thomson as strategic supplier. We plan to leverage their broad multi-media technical innovation and global deployment experience to meet our technical expectations, user requirements and cost-effective solutions. UPC Broadband is now actively rolling out its digital services platform in the Netherlands and launching new suites of digital and IP-based services that will focus on dynamic new services such as Video on Demand, interactive TV and new broadband communications services."
"As the leading global provider of cable, satellite, and terrestrial set-top boxes, Thomson is committed to delivering innovative products that satisfy both the operator's need to cost-effectively deploy new services and the consumer's desire for high-performance, highly functional set-top boxes and residential gateways. This includes support for such features as Digital Video Recording (DVR), high-definition and MPEG-4," said Frederic Kurkjian, Vice President of the Worldwide Cable Business Unit within Thomson's Access Platforms & Gateways activity. "We are delighted to be part of such an exciting rollout with a company of UGC's experience and renown," he concluded.
