Two Independent Operators Select Tekelec's Class 5 Switch2 March 2005
Tekelec , a leading developer of telecommunications products for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, today announced Bloomingdale Telephone Company and Noxapater Telephone Company have purchased the Tekelec 7000 Class 5 Packet Switch.
Noxapater Telephony Company, an independent operating company (IOC) in northern Mississippi, is deploying the Tekelec 7000 by the end of this year to provide a seamless migration to next-generation architecture while increasing capacity and satisfying local number portability requirements. Tekelec's solution enables the operator to leverage its existing equipment investments while migrating to next-generation network architecture for deploying advanced services and applications.
"We chose to work with Tekelec after reviewing many systems because of its successful history and technical expertise working with independent carriers of our size," said Cary D. Stringer, vice president, Noxapater Telephone Company. "With Tekelec's proven, scaleable switching solution, we will be able to upgrade our network and offer new, attractive next-gen services in order to grow our customer base. We expect a quick return on our investment."
Bloomingdale Telephone has served the Bloomingdale, Mich., area since 1904 and today provides a diverse suite of services, including business and residential telephone and long distance services, cable and satellite television, wireless phone services and networking. The operator is growing rapidly to deliver services to the entire South West Michigan region. To support its expansion, Bloomingdale will install the Tekelec 7000 in a "cap-and-grow" deployment over its legacy switch. Bloomingdale plans also to deploy Tekelec's Packet Interface Card to provide IP connectivity for advanced multimedia services.
Bloomingdale is also deploying Tekelec's Meritus and TelAssist solutions to offer hosted business voice services with enhanced features while leveraging its existing network equipment. Meritus enables Bloomingdale to deliver hosted voice services with all of the features of a key system or PBX, including group logic, call control, feature activation and subscriber management. TelAssist can be integrated with Meritus to allow subscribers to control telephone services from a personal computer - similar to voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities.
"We can cap and grow the Tekelec 7000 next-generation switch over our legacy equipment, add IP connectivity and cost-effectively transition to a next-generation network at our own pace," said Joe Snyder, assistant general manager, Bloomingdale. "In addition, Tekelec's hosted business services solutions enable us to immediately provide enhanced services with IP-like features, which opens up opportunities to generate new revenues and improve customer satisfaction."
Tricia Hosek, president and general manager of Tekelec's Switching Solutions Group, added, "Noxapater and Bloomingdale demonstrate the flexibility of Tekelec's solutions to meet the diverse needs of operators that are at different stages in their migration to IP. Our Class 5 switch provides an economical way to add next-generation features while still leveraging investments in legacy equipment, and our hosted telephony services provide reliable, business-class features that subscribers demand."
About Tekelec 7000 Class 5 Packet Switch
As part of Tekelec's broad softswitch product portfolio, the Tekelec 7000 addresses the small-to-medium sized markets. The system is based on a switch-on-a-card design through which each interface card (or circuit pack) performs all of the functions required of an end office switch. Functions include a complete set of CLASS and customer calling services. Each card provides dedicated resources for call processing, service logic, switch fabric, media processing and signaling. Configured with a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) card, the Tekelec 7000 is capable of delivering voice in many packet telephony applications and provides a foundation for service providers to migrate to multimedia service offerings. By eliminating common equipment, the Tekelec 7000 greatly improves service margins and helps carriers control network costs. A fully functional system can be deployed with a single card, and additional expansion cards can be added with market growth.
About Meritus and TelAssist Hosted Business Services
Meritus, Tekelec's Hosted Business Services solution, provides enhanced voice features for businesses over plain old telephone service (POTS) lines, delivering features similar to a key system or PBX without having expensive equipment or proprietary terminals at the customer premise. This provides operators new revenue-generating services that can differentiate the solutions they are selling to their business customers. These features include business group logic, call control, feature activation and subscriber management and allow subscribers to set up business groups that define features for the user group. The value of this application is the significant reduction in the cost of customer premise equipment and the graphical user interface (GUI) controls that provide a new level of functionality for company administrators and end users.
TelAssist is a desktop application that enhances communications and control for the business or residential user. Used in conjunction with Meritus, TelAssist eliminates the need for an LCD screen on a telephone and allows subscribers to control their telephone services from a personal computer.
